International Letter Rates and Services : War Years 1940 - 1945

On May 10, 1940, German troops invaded the Netherlands and within one week began its five-year occupation. This post is the second in a series dealing with international letter rates and services and shows letters to foreign destinations mailed during the war years.

The occupation period did not see any increases in international letter rates or service fees. However, there were two significant reductions. The 12 1/2c first weight letter rate was dropped to 10c for letters addressed to Germany and to member nations of the European Postal Union, and the express fee to all countries was reduced from 25c to 20c. The reduced letter rates will not be discussed in this post but will be the subject of a future article.

Although the 12 1/2c letter rate was unchanged during the occupation years, the same cannot be said for the 12 1/2c definitive stamps printed during this period. The pre-war Queen Wilhelmina stamps continued to be used during the early months of the occupation but were replaced by the ominous "guilloche" series in October, 1940.  In turn, the guilloche series was replaced by the "dove"issue in April, 1941.  In 1943 and 1944, a definitive series featuring Dutch naval heroes made its appearance.
